1. The American shorthair

This cat is one of the most popular house cats today, it has fairly ordinary appearance and it can be seen with many different patterns and it can be in many different colors. This cat is descended from a British shorthair, but it has a few physical differences. For one, the American shorthair is larger than the the British shorthair but it is also leaner, all in all much more athletic. Even though this cat is extremely able to hunt in the wild, it often chooses a domestic lifestyle and would pick a couch instead of a tree any day. Despite the “American” in their name, they have no intention of chasing the American dream, or anything for that matter, they are very easy going and have a calm temper. It is not unusual to see this cat getting along with dogs. Their calm personality is very soothing for little kids, so in case you have a few youngsters running around the house, you might find this cat useful in your household. One more thing worth mentioning about this cat is that it has a very long lifespan, they usually live up to 20 years.

2. The Sphynx

The Sphynx as we know it today was developed by selective breeding from around 1960. It does have a bit odd appearance, especially for a cat, but it is very popular among cat lovers. They are commonly referred to as the hairless cat, but the sphynx isn’t really hairless. Until you touch this lovely cat you can’t notice it, but it has a very thin fuzz over its body. The sort of feeling you get from touching the sphynx is similar to touching a peach, although peaches are much less cuddly. This cat does require a lot of attention and affection but cat lovers don’t seem to mind.

3. The Siamese

Even though these cats are usually presented as a bit evil in cartoons, it really has nothing to do with their personality in real life. They do require more attention than most cats and are very playful and social, but they are also very loving and affectionate. Because of their nervous and playful nature they might not be the best choice for you if you have little kids around the house, but besides that they are great creatures to share your home with. And when we say home we really mean it, these cats can’t stand traveling and changing their routine, they love having things always the same.

5. The Ragdoll

These adorable fur balls are so gentle they could be hired as nannies for kids. They are extremely careful with their claws and teeth during play and are one of the most thoughtful cat breeds in the world. There is not a single cat that is more laid-back and relaxed than the Ragdoll. These cats couldn’t care less about anything, they just follow their owner around the house like a cute little puppy all day long, and that is pretty much all that a ragdoll does. They are meant to be held indoors since they have no idea how to defend themselves, so you shouldn’t have any aggressive pets around them. They bond quickly and are very loyal. They also make great friends for other pets no matter the species or breed. They absolutely love young children, and the feeling is usually mutual. They got the name ragdoll in the 60s when they were first bred, because of their floppy and relaxed body when they are picked up from the ground.
