There are many ways to cool off in the summer heat. Eating an ice cream, swimming or drinking cold water can be some of the ways. Animals also have a need to cool off. Dogs sweat through their small paws, and because they are not as large as the rest of their body, they try to find some other ways to lower their temperature – something like the dog in the following picture.

Water is the most important thing
Consuming enough water is a “must” during hot weather. Animals do have an exigency for consuming water because their skin is covered by fur or plumage. These little monkeys are showing their huge happiness after an exhausting day spent.

Without water, there will be no living beings on Earth. It regulates the body temperature, helps all organs to work properly, and it is overly needed for vital functions. Freezer can also help with that temperature problem.

You probably haven’t heard that elephants need to drink 100 liters of water a day. It depends on different kind of species how much water the animal can drink. For example, elephants can function properly only 48 hours without hydrating.

Special cooling system
Species like camels can endure very long time without water because they keep the water in their back. Their back can contain about 130 l of water and they are famous for a special air conditioning system. The camel also uses an additional cooling system for its brain in case of stress situations. It sweats only at the back of its head.

Magical air sacs
Birds need fresh water especially. It helps them to cool off and there is also something more. They have five or more pairs of air sacs that are connected to the lungs and to the rest of their body. The air sacs contribute to the lightness and they also add to the efficiency of respiration. They play an important part in the cooling system.

For some species like monkeys, eating an ice cream can be one of the ways for escaping a hot day. They have a similar cooling system to humans and what do we do when it is hot outside? Giraffe needs to drink water only once in a few days. Most of the water comes from the plants they eat. They also have a unique nasal cooling system to regulate brain temperature up to 3 C lower than the rest of their body.

Unlike people, cats don’t sweat so it can be a struggle for them to cool down in the summer. A cat’s methods of cooling down can be staying out of the sun, drinking water and being inactive. So if you want to help your cat cool off, prepare some ice, turn on the air conditioner and relax together.
